What is Trauma?
Trauma is an emotional and physiological response to deeply distressing or disturbing events. Sudden, unpredictable events or experiences that pose a direct threat to life often overwhelm a person’s ability to cope. As a result of these traumatic events, a person’s ability to feel safe in the world can be shattered.
Do Any of These Sound Like You?
- Do you find yourself struggling with upsetting emotions and memories?
- Do you often feel numb and/or disconnected from the world or those around you?
- Do you find yourself feeling isolated and overwhelmed?
Trauma Transformation and Resolution in Austin, Texas
Treatment for trauma goes beyond just the act of talking about the trauma, and the reason is that just talking about the trauma often results in physiological arousal. So learning skills that calm the physical arousal are extremely important in the path of treatment. Developing a greater awareness of triggering events and learning to differentiate between the past and the present are other skills utilized in the treatment of trauma.
Having experienced trauma firsthand, I understand its pernicious, lasting influence on the body, the mind, and the heart. I use tailored EMDR techniques and emotional transformation (ETT) therapy techniques to mediate the harmful effects of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. In PTSD, long-lasting physiological arousal makes talk therapy ineffectual. EMDR and EIT are effective tools to decrease physiological arousal that I have successfully used for many years.
Finding a way to cope that is true to you, with your loved ones is what makes life rewarding. By regaining a sense of direction, hope is possible. A warm, supportive environment is essential in affecting lasting change to remove the boulders of dysfunction.
